Three little Aussies
Passport Photo
Colleen Hickey has done extensive research and written a wonderful story of her father's life, with photos of family and friends.
Like other 'passenger stories' this account provides a valuable insight into the history of immigration to Australia and helps to personalise the experience of those who made the long, brave journey.
Michael Hickey was born in Fahy Ballyburly, County Offaly Ireland in 1929. He had 14 siblings but was the only one who migrated to Australia.
In 1952, at the age of 22 MIchael and his friend Paddy McNamee set off on the Asturias, bound for Melbourne. They found work with the railways and travelled around extensively. Michael also worked as a 'greaser' in Mt Isa and was based at the Star Gully Barracks.
Evntually he found his way to Sydney where he met his future wife, Kathleen, at the Gaelic Club in 1964.
They settled in Sydney where Michael loved swimming at the beaches, particularly Coogee. His daughter Colleen has many happy memories of days spent at the beach.
